History of Torrey Pines in San Diego
Located in La Jolla, California, the Torrey Pines Golf Course right on top of coastal cliffs that overlook the Pacific Ocean. It is known as a premier golf course as operated and owned by a city. It is names after a pine tree
It is a rare one at that too. The namesake of the golf course is Torrey Pines. It is a remnant of a mountain range that is considered to be prehistoric and is now under the Pacific. The tree was first discovered by Dr. Charles Parry back n he 1850s and decided to name it after Dr. John Torrey, his mentor. The Torrey grows in quite an irregular fashion when compared to the white pine varieties. It has a pliable pulp and will often get twisted and gnarly whenever it s faced with strong winds.
It used to be an army camp
The federal government back in the 1940 leased the total of 740 acres of the area as well as from other landowners adjacent to the setting and set up an artillery camp. This was due to the fear of the Japanese invasion. It opened before Pearl Harbor and before America’s entry into World War II.
The camp was the declared a surplus though less than three months from when Japan declared surrenders. It became a racecourse bearing the same name in 1951. It was in 1955 when it was decided that the setting should be converted into a golf course with 36 holes.
Inception to redesigns
The original design was by William P. Bell. However, he passed away before things got started. It was his son, William F. Bell that oversaw the final course design and completes it too. It opened in 1977 and it has two courses with 18 holes each on the site.
There have been a number of redesigns that were done on the course as well. Billy Casper and his partner David Rainsville designed the tow course back in 1975. Jack Daray Jr and Stephen Halsey did it in 1988. The last redesign was done by Rees Jones in 2001. This was in an attempt for the curse to be chosen as the host of the US open. It was a success and the golf course was indeed chosen as host for the US Open in 2008. It is expected to host the US Open again come 2021.
